C Y T

By Eric Bass.  In the play, a young boy and his mother play a game in which they build a list of things they both imagine to be in “grandmother’s purse.”  Each new item sets off a world of fantastic adventures.  Simple, tourable set.  Contemporary and fantasy costumes. CAST: 4 (2 F, 2 M) plus hand puppets, or 2 (2F) with hand puppets and the two male characters played by life-sized puppets.

Grandma and Grandpa are now just fond memories for Mom, so she engages her son, Sonny Boy, in a game to help him create a story of his grandmother whom he is too young to remember.  For the boy, she is an adventuress, a fighter of knights and tigers.  For the mom, she is the parent who left to go adventuring a bit too often.  With each new item “found” in Grandmother’s purse, a fantasy adventure ensues with Grandma and Grandpa appearing and interacting with Mom and Sonny Boy.  Sonny Boy convinces Mom that she should be more like his strong and brave Grandma, so Mom spontaneously takes off on an adventure of her own.  At first, Sonny Boy is proud as a peacock of his brave new mother.  But as night falls, he grows scared. Realizing how much he needs her, he just wants Mom to come back!  Sonny Boy’s fantasy brings Mom back in the form of a dancing knight who has learned the importance of getting away for an adventure now and then.  Grandma’s story ends as she transforms into a wild swan and flies away, a very good fantasy.  Sonny Boy is left with Grandmother’s purse... and his caring Mom, a very good “real thing.”

Cindy is the unlucky candidate, and must stay in a picket-fence prison while Nubbins and Glopp work to free her.  They discover that when an Invisible Person touches the shoulders of a real person, it changes their character.  With nothing to lose, they devise a plan to trick old Grumpdump into undergoing a character change.  The plan works as Cindy is freed and Grumpdump is transformed into a generous sort.  At summer’s end, Cindy realizes she’s too old for Invisible Friends, and bids Nubbins and Glopp goodbye.  Luckily, they are quickly re-invented by a younger child in need of some “true and faithful friends” who will be there “through thin and thick!”

Based on the Russian Folk Tale by the English author David Foxton. A tale of a thrilling and amusing chase to catch the fabulous Firebird and release her from the wicked Czar. Costumes: Russian Folk style. Setting: three specific sets plus a common area to all. CAST 19: (4 F, 15 M) with doubling, or up to 25 +( 6 F, 19 M) plus extras.

Czar Vyslav, nagged incessantly by his wife over their country's shortcomings, is overjoyed when his gardener, Simeon, produces an apple tree bearing golden fruit. Before he can use this "miracle" to his country's good the golden apples are stolen by the Firebird. Vyslav's three sons undertake to retrieve the apples, and the victor is promised that he will be heir to the throne. Their adventures are chronicled by the puppeteer, who controls the action of the play throughout, frequently "freezing" the performers to change the course of the storyline. An action-filled play with considerable opportunities for audience involvement and participation.
